Remember when I posted about not being able to decided between the color for the Tord Boontje garland?

It's here!

I finally decided.

Snow!

I had the day off today because of this beautiful stuff!

Snow Ball

The dogs love the snow. The boys (the black lab and the dalmatian) decided that a little snow shouldn’t keep them from playing fetch.

Ball in the snow

They may have a ball fixation. May.

bench

I originally wanted a lovely nelson bench to go in this little nook in our entry way, but with a hefty price tag, it’s going to have to wait. Luckily, we found this beauty at Urban Outfitters while out Christmas shopping. My mom surprised me with it at Christmas. Online the photos make it look dull and very brown. but in real life, it’s very vivid and colorful.

bench2

It’s a perfect place for Jason and I to toss our keys, bags and purses when we get home at night. Also a great place to store some easy access shoes as the back door is just to the right of this photo.

bench1

The silver bowl is a TJ Maxx find from forever ago. The wire basket was a red sticker find at Target a few months back. It’s holding magazines and our video camera right now.

I’m contemplating what I want to install above the bench. A large poster would do the trick, but a coat rack would be much more convenient for us. Would the Eames hang-it-all clash with the bench? Maybe something more industrial?

Lindsey Adelman DIY Light

adelman

Last week this DIY made the blog rounds because of the fabulous Morgan from The Brick House . That’s where I first saw the light fixture and decided it was the perfect fit for the breakfast nook.

I immediately bought all the parts that Lindsey recommended. I knew I wanted to hard wire the light (the instructions are for a plug in light), but decided I would deal with that when the time came to install it.

All the parts arrived and I was eager to put it all together. I thought I would share some of the tips I would have found helpful before I tried to put this together.

First off, here is a visual of the parts she lists on the PDF and website. Some are not even visible on the diagram of parts, so this would have been helpful.

And another set:: The ones that are not lettered are the wiring tools and electrical needs from mcmaster.com

Here is the finished product, sans hard wire parts.

adelman assembled

The cool thing about the project is that all of the different DIY’s will be slightly different because it’s up to you how you want to use the various lengths of pipe and how you want the elbows to bend.

A couple of helpful tips when trying to make this for your-self::

a | no matter what your electrical skill ( I have basically ZERO) you CAN DO THIS. It’s really easy, but time consuming and methodical.

b| indexfasteners.com have a $50 minimum purchase policy so I didn’t buy the 2 plug buttons from them. Basically it’s a plug that covers up the hole in the cluster body(item F.). No biggie, either live with the holes or go to Lowes or Home Depot and get one from there.

c | I wish I had bought some sort of electrical sleeve to thread the wires through the pipes and keep them together. You can probably find this from mcmaster.com. Maybe something like this?

d | I assembled the brass pipes together to my liking before I started wiring the light. This seemed to work well. I did have a little trouble with some pipes not tight enough and I had to tighten them with the wires inside. I was worried I would twist the wires too much and pull them out of the socket.

e | a couple times the white wiring broke as I was assembling the sockets. I kept wondering if a higher gauge wire would work better since in the demo photos it looks as if Lindsey has a much higher gauge wire than what she recommended. Maybe that was for demonstration purposes? I don’t think a much higher gauge wire will thread thru the pipes as well as the ones she recommends.

f | buy extra feet of wire. you will want it as a safety net in case you have any breakage. Maybe an extra foot? or two if you’re clumsy.

g | I didn’t use the electrical tape. I kinda forgot. I have plans of completely rewiring the whole fixture because I’m not sure all the connections are safe. I’ll use the electrical tape next time to ensure all connections are secure.

h | you will need a phillips and flat head screw driver to assemble. scissors are helpful too.

i | i plan on purchasing another pipe and a ceiling cap similar to this item #BAFL06NW from GrandBrass.com.

j | there is not right or wrong way to install the misc pipes. place them where you want. Lindsey doesn’t specify where the lengths of pipe should go, so go with what looks good to you. Same goes for adjusting the elbow joints.

k | I assembled the light buy looking at the drawn diagram via the PDF from Lindsey’s website. I also assembled the sockets straight from her drawn diagram.

I am ordering more parts from grand brass this week. Hopefully by next weekend we can try an install. I may have a step-by-step instructions for the wiring up soon as well. We will see if i can produce that…

Frames Wallpaper

Forever ago I bought the Frames wallpaper from  Graham & Brown. I even installed the wallpaper within a month of getting that package! BUT, little ole me never got around to taking a decent photo of the wallpaper to show. Well, I finally did. Woot!

frames_wallpaper

This was my first time installing wallpaper and I did it all by my lonesome. It really wasn’t that hard. A little messy, but it turned out great. I used a normal wallpaper paste and a paint roller. Rollered the paste onto the paper, let it soak for 5 min(ok maybe less, I was antsy) and then stood up on a 6 foot ladder and squeegeed the paper down the wall.

frames wallpaper!

Only problem I had was trimming the ends. The paper was moist, so even a very sharp exacto knife tended to tear the paper instead of slice it. I ended up trimming it a little longer than the boards and went back after it was dry to trim it up nice and clean.

I have plans on wallpapering the downstairs bathroom. I only had to go around two outlet covers on this wall. Easy peasy. But that bathroom is going to be a PAIN! Wallpapering around a toilet and pedestal sink? fun.

office

I’m not totally loving the Lerberg bookcases behind my computer desk. (seen behind the mess of boxes in this photo) I like the style, but I’m thinking I need something a little more substantial behind the desk. Edging towards an Expedit bookcase from Ikea.

Maybe it’s because I just love this photo. The bookcases and styling in it. This is what a home office should look like!

anya-hindmarch

I think this is two bookcases side by side, but I’m thinking that having all that cube hole room would be a lot nicer for office storage. Wondering where I could put the Lerberg shelves if I decide against them?

library

This library is now sans Christmas tree, but it’s still basically the same. I had grand ideas of DIYing a set of these fabulous bookshelves via The Brick House (with whom inspired me to tackle a light fixture DIY that I will be sharing very soon). I still had plans to make these awesome shelves when we happened upon two sets of bookcases at Target.

A set of Thomas O’Brien modern shelves on clearance. When I first saw them, they were priced at 1/2 off. A good deal at $89.99 each (marked down from 179.99). Alas, I still had visions of those beautiful DIY shelves in my head and decided that I would not purchase the O’Brien shelves.

A few days after Christmas, when I was scouring Target for a 75% off white Christmas tree, Jason and I happened to pass the two shelving units again. I showed them to him. We agreed they were nice and fit our ashetic, but we wanted those pipe and plank shelves.

Then, for curiosity’s sake (and because I  LOVE those little red stickers) I peeked at the price, expecting to find them still at the $89.99 price tag. They were not.

$44.99. EACH. Seriously? Two great looking bookcases for under $100? That’s WAY cheaper than we could ever expect to build those pipe bookshelves for. We were sold. Load them up boys!

Surprisingly, they are made very well. Not as sturdy as I would like them to be, but I also plan on attaching them to studs in the wall so we have no accidents of books flying off the shelves and Tottenham yelling “TIMBER!”

Easy to assemble and great looking.

bookshelves2

We haven’t quite figured out the placement for the shelves yet. All we know is that they will be on that far wall. The shelves sink into the old berber carpet now, so we haven’t place anything on them for fear that they will, well ya know, “TIMBER!” We don’t plan on attaching them to the wall until we have replaced the carpet with new wood flooring.

bookshelves3

Thinking about placing them just wide enough so that we can fit in a bar cart in between the two.

PRESENTS!

presents under the rohrer tree

Well i figured before all the 2010 hype passes us by I should talk about my favorite presents of 2009. Because it’s awkward to talk about Christmas presents in March. I think everyone had a slim Christmas this year. By slim, I mean my family didn’t go broke buying presents as we like to do every year. We had a little restraint this year. The presents get better and more thoughtful when we have restraint, so I kinda of like it this way. Well, hope your presents were just as lovely, but here are my favorite presents of 2009!

presents_2009

1 | Atlas Tapestry :: via Urban Outfitters. My mom surprised me with this little gem. I never get anything off my Amazon wish list. This year I did!

2| Miniature Pony S&P Shakers :: HOW ADORABLE! Via Anthro, but sadly, I could not find them online. Jason found these in our local store along with #5 and this super cute egg crate he also got me.

3 | Squirrel Wine Bottle Stopper :: via Johnathan Adler. This was actually a birthday present from my sister and it was a really good one! Had to share.

4| Nikon 18-55mm Lens :: So far this is the most used present! My grandmother surprised me with it and I have not taken it off my D80 yet! Love it.

5| Hedge Hog Tea Towel :: via Anthropologie. How freakin adorable is this? My husband found this!

6| Woven Bench :: via Urban Outfitters. Happened upon this while browsing the store. It’s sooo much prettier in real life. My mom surprised me with it and it now lives in the entry way (which I’ll show soon).

7 | iPod iTouch :: 32GB via Target. What can I say, my hubby knows what I want! Used this baby to watch movies while driving up to the outer banks for a wedding!

8 | For Like Ever Poster :: via Village This was on my wish list last year as well but I didn’t get it. This year my mom was determined to get it for me and she did. It’s fabulous!

9 | Cardboard Deer Head :: via Urban. My grandmother didn’t know why I wanted it, but she will soon see!

Well…I havn’t been totally honest with you. The best present I received this year wasn’t anything for the house, a gadget or art. It was a very special gift that my Husband planned and got, just for me because he is just that awesome. Yes, I really did want a pony for Christmas. A very handsome, grey pony. Named Wily.

Here he is saying Hi! And here we are strutting our stuff!

Hope ya’ll had a beautiful a Christmas and here’s to a great 2010!

kitchen shelves

I really want to renovate our kitchen. I love to cook, so having a beautiful kitchen is just as important to me as having beautiful and tasty food. If i have my way, I want open shelving above the counters. I also want butcher block counter tops. These are lovely as well as the metal shelves. Think the shelves are from Ikea, maybe?

domino_small_apartments_kitchen

White shelves make the space more airy, which I need to a smallish kitchen. Love those spot lights.

Paul Costello

Oh! To only have a fabulous chandelier in the kitchen!

Buther block! Turqouise cabinets!

I currently have two swatches of color similar to this up on the cabinets right now. I love the turquoise cabinets with the butcher block counters and the white walls.

What a great sink!

Swoon! The Floor! The cabinets! The counter! The wallpaper! This is fast becoming my favorite inspiration!

I’m a sucker for color. Love the green. I mostly love the shelves.

Renovating the kitchen is a big project and it’s not one that we will get around to anytime soon, but a girl can dream.

Obsessed

Oh Oh Oh Ohhhhhhh. Cue the 2009 Mariah song. OK, ok, enough. My new favorite place to find home decor inspiration is Lonny Mag. Have you seen this online shelter magazine? It’s fabulous. + old Domino issues that I flip thru once in a while. Here are two rooms that I am currently obsessed with.

This one is from Domino, their last issue. I adore the simplicity of this room and the fact that it looks like it could be a hotel room or someone’s bedroom. Really REALLY thinking about replicating it for one of our guest bedrooms. I just love it that much.

Oh those ferns and that black lacquer table with the leather. Swoon. And I love that the walls are white and the window is black! What an easy trick to make a big impact. Wonder what the window trim in the living room would look like black…

I’m not sure if it’s the weather that has me drawn to it or my changing tastes, but I find myself craving black in my home. Walls, doors, windows, etc. Which makes sense that I am crazy in love with Anthony Gianacakos bedroom from the afore mentioned Lonny Mag.

And his creative use and stylying of his closet!

Oddly, I’m finding that I’m being drawn to more masculine items in my recent photo searches. Trying to move away from the girly girly. More inspiration to come, I’m dreaming of blue cabinets and open shelving…
